Skills Ratings

There are plenty of rating scales out there, but we’ll keep it nice and simple…

  • You have never ridden a mountain bike on a single track trail.

    You Can:

    1. Stay upright pedaling on paved surfaces

  • You have little experience riding a mountain bike off-road.

    You Can Execute Level 1 Skills AND:

    1. One finger brake on both front and rear brakes

    2. Ride with level pedals when not pedaling

    3. Shift gears, though maybe not always be in the “best” gear

  • You like riding off-road and on wide dirt trails but are not yet comfortable riding terrain with roots, rocks, tight corners, and steep stuff.

    You Can Execute Level 2 Skills AND:

    1. Control your braking at speed

    2. Ride with level pedals when while coasting

    3. Use your dropper seat post (if you have one)

    4. Maneuver over small rocks, roots, and obstacles

  • You ride fairly regularly and are starting to tackle more technical features and do some rides on singletrack.

    You Can Execute Level 3 Skills AND:

    1. Have confident and controlled braking at faster speeds

    2. Are looking ahead to anticipate terrain and shift gears appropriately

    3. Use your suspension to get over small obstacles

    4. Have confidence rolling over small rocks, roots, and drops

    5. Navigate wider switchbacks and turns

  • You are confident riding blue-rated trails and are willing to attempt black trails, though you may need to walk your bike in sections.

    You Can Execute Level 4 Skills AND:

    1. Have controlled, independent front and rear braking

    2. Anticipating changes in terrain and shift gears smoothly and frequently

    3. Can perform front wheel lifts to get over obstacles or down drops in terrain

    4. Let go of brakes while standing on level pedals while gaining speed

  • You are comfortable on all green, blue, and black-rated trails and can shift gears and use your dropper seat post with ease.

    You Can Execute Level 5 Skills AND:

    1. Are confident on a variety of singletrack

    2. Can shift your body position to keep traction on steep climbs

    3. Have the timing and coordination to ride through all types of berms

    4. Are confident hitting small (1-2 ft) drops and don’t mind tires briefly off the ground

  • You are comfortable riding black-rated trails and aggressive, technical terrain.

    You Can Execute Level 6 Skills AND:

    1. Are confident on riding all green, blue, black, and some sections of double black trails

    2. Can climb steep and technical climbs and switchbacks

    3. Can clear table top jumps, large drops, and more
